Revolution gets official name: Wii

Postby supertoad » Thu Apr 27, 2006 8:12 pm

Nintendo has given their next console a final name: Wii - pronounced as "we"

It's a good name, but Revolution was better...

Introducing… Wii.

As in “we.”

While the code-name Revolution expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer. Wii will break down that wall that seperates videogame players from everybody else. Wii will put people more in touch with their games… and each other. But you’re probably asking: What does the name mean?

Wii sounds like “we,” which emphasizes the console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.

Wii has a distinctive “ii” spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people playing it. And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of videogames that sets it apart from the crowd.

So that’s Wii. But now Nintendo needs you. Because it’s really not about you or me. It’s about Wii. And together, Wii will change everything.

I'm just saying, "Revolution" isn't really a good name in general. "Wii" is worse, it hardly makes sense.

In one news story I read they were talking to NOA about how it was chosen. It's definitely the US/English name.

Yeah that's a major problem with the name. But I have to tell myself, they thought about that right? I mean, they did notice and take it into consideration, RIGHT??!! :/

I think it was very smart of Nintendo to release this info before E3. They still have time to change the name if they choose to, and even if they dont (I don't think they will) the issue should have died down enough by then. It would've been even worse if game info was overshadowed by the controversy surrounding the name change.

Right now I think Revolution was better, and I still hope they go back to it. I wonder how we'll feel about this in a few weeks when it has had time to "normalize" so to speech.

This is a pretty interesting article in defense of the name.
