My conversation with a Nintendo programmer

Postby supertoad » Sun Oct 16, 2005 8:25 am

I had the chance to talk to a Nintendo programmer who is working on a game for the Revolution. Unfortunately, I couldn't get much out of him on the subject, but he was a cool guy.

He said I could quote him on anything as long as I used 'M' as his name, so here's some parts of the conversation. Some parts have been edited to remove bloat, but nothing has been factually changed.

eam1187: can you say anything about it?
M: not really :) exept its a cool game :)

eam1187: how did you get involved with nintendo?
M: Well I was a good programmer, so I got an internship
M: and ended up working there

eam1187: how do you feel the ds compares to the psp?
M: its different
eam1187: i knew you'd say something like that
M: As you probably realised, Nintendo is trying to go 1 step ahead
M: on both console and handheld
M: the ds is different kind of gaming
M: the touch screen adds a new dimension to it
M: some people prefer it, others dont
eam1187: do you think developers have used it to its potential yet or are we going to see new types of games on the ds?
M: most of its potential is still hidden to the public actually
eam1187: can you unhide a peice of it?
M: no, I wont say how :P
M: hehe =)

eam1187: do you think we're going to see a web browser on the ds?
M: no, so far nothing like that has been planned

eam1187: have you played any mario games on the revolution?
M: No, I havent :)
M: I'm not much of a gamer myself
eam1187: seen any?
M: I enjoy doing them
M: even more designing them (I hope to be a designer one day)
M: no I havent seen any either
eam1187: would you say if you had?
M: Not sure :)

eam1187: how well do you think the revolution will compete with ps3/xbox 360?
eam1187: hopefully not third place again?
M: I hope not
M: then again we cant really tell
M: If the people stay closed minded on the old way of playing video games
M: then it probably will
M: if they're willing to give something new a shot, then it probably wont :)

eam1187: i know a lot of people who just dont understand the revolution controller, do you think that will change?
M: the revolution is pretty much seen as Miyamoto's dream
M: he's always believed that any great video game can be played with only 1 button
M: its as simple as it gets
M: you probably realised most of miyamoto's game are very simple
M: super smash brother melee
M: have you played it?
eam1187: of course
M: 2 buttons
M: and a joystick
M: you can do all the moves with thoses 3 things
M: the controller is very much 1 or 2 directions and the big A button
M: it might be hard to "visualise" how to use it
M: but once you get a hold of it, its very simple, as simple as controlling a mouse
eam1187: im excited about it

eam1187: do you know anything about new smb on the ds that you can tell me?
M: I havent hear much of it
M: but imma let something slip
M: expect ssb online on the revolution
M: :)

No, I don't have any special connections. This was just a guy my friend met playing an online game, and he introduced me to him.
