Debate: Gage vs supertoad

Postby supertoad » Mon Jun 18, 2007 5:42 am

This debate originated in this topic:

http://www.toadscastle.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5692

But it has grown into something big enough to deserve its own topic out of spam, so I split it.

For context, this debate occurred after our debate on IRC:

The point you allegedly "proved" was what?

That some people are making others look bad and are corrupting today's society.

Can you not see it for yourself? Are you not embarrassed of those types of people then having to be categorized as that? Certainly I'm not a punk type of person but having to be a teen in today's society is lame. I don't want to be frowned upon and be thought of like them...

No, I can't. All people are individuals, and they make individual choices to promote their own happiness. If someone is happy being a "punk type" as you say, then good for them. It doesn't hurt me in any way.

True but like I said, just because a few teens are acting like delinquents they'll think all teens are like that...

Who is this "they" and why do "they" matter? Anyone who matters to YOU will know YOU, and they will not look at you as a stereotype.

"They" are the ones who are hard working or the elder generations.

You only answered the first half of my question. The second half is: why do they matter?

Because they are the ones who basically worked hard in their life and helped shape America. I don't see how we, as the youth generation, are paying them back any....

The "youth generation" as a collective body doesn't owe anything to the older generation as a collective body. In reality individuals (such as in families) have individual obligations they must keep, but that point is irrelevant to how your peers are perceived by the latter group.

Gage Brings a good point, ST. They basically made this nation for us, and we seem to be paying them back by destroying it, what with war, riots, gangs, violence, drug usage, and lack of respect.

The older generation did not altruistically create America as you imply; they merely lived their lives like we are, and their generation had its share of the vices you listed. People have a tendency to look back at the past as if it were better back then, when in reality things generally get better with the progression of time, not the other way around.
